Welcome to the Bioinformatics Program!

Why Choose Bioinformatics?

Bioinformatics students enjoy the challenge of being on the cutting edge of a new field. Bioinformatics combines biology, computer science, and mathematics to solve some of the most fundamental biological questions. Students find their place in the bioinformatics program because because the traditional majors do not seem interesting or challenging enough. Bioinformaticians want to make a difference in the world. Currently there are more bioinformatics job openings than bioinformaticians to fill those jobs. Job security is a big selling point for bioinformatics, and it will continue to play an important role for many years.

What Does the Major Entail?

The major leans heavily on biology and computer science course work. Several new courses have recently been developed for the degree program. BIOL 1650: Introduction to Bioinformatics, provides students with more information about the major and helps them decide if the major is right for them. While not required for the major, we highly recommend that all students start working in a bioinformatics lab as soon as possible Lab experience is paramount to success in the bioinformatics program.

This Major Sounds Hard.

Can I Do It?

This major is not for everyone. However, if you feel a strong desire to help others and to make a real difference in the world, this is the perfect major for you. The major is hard, but it will enable you to be competitive in any software development or bioinformatics lab, where you will be able to use your skills to cure disease, discover novel biological relationships, develop new algorithms for biological discovery, or just tell your mom how awesome you are. The computer programming aspect of this major is typically the hardest for people, so if you are able to program, you will succeed at bioinformatics. If you ever feel like bioinformatics is too difficult, but you really like the idea of being a bioinformatician, please come see me or send me an email through the contact form. I really want to see each of you succeed.
